Amazing flavour, uniquely Picota
The Jerte Valley lies in the north of the Spanish Extremadura region, in a range of hills with lots of summer sunshine, crystal clear water and fertile soil. 40 different varieties of cherries are cultivated here. This makes the valley, through which the Jerte river flows, the most important cherry-producing region of Spain , and one of the principal ones in Europe . The Picota cherry is the most important variety because of its distinctive characteristics.
Picota cherries were first cultivated 600 years ago from the native wild cherries of the Jerte Valley , and even today grow almost exclusively in this region. The cherry plantations are to be found virtually undisturbed on the valley slopes at heights of 700 to 1200 metres. The differences in altitude allow for the harvest of Picota cherries to take place from mid-June and throughout July.
