5-a-day collage wins Foods from Spain schools competition
Foods from Spain has announced the winner of its National Primary Schools Competition, part of its promotional campaign for 2008.

Children from North Yorkshire primary school North Duffield beat almost 500 entries from classes around the country with their “Say Olé to 5-a-day” collage, which shows a graceful dancer wearing a dress covered in Spanish fruit and vegetables.

The judging panel for the competition included food journalists, chefs and representatives of Foods from Spain and the Spanish Embassy, who were pleased with the children’s knowledge of fresh fruit and vegetables from Spain, and the link they made to the 5-a-day campaign.

The National Primary Schools Competition was launched in April, as a generic element in Foods from Spain’s 2008 promotion for fresh Spanish fruit and vegetables. The competition asked classes in years three to six from all primary schools in the UK, to produce a collage that represented ‘Healthy eating with fresh fruit and vegetables from Spain’, using materials from glossy magazines to dried fruit and nuts.

Director of Foods from Spain, María José Sevilla said: “We were thrilled with the response to our second National Primary Schools Competition. As well as receiving more entries to the competition than last year, we also saw an incredibly high standard of collages.

“Educating children about including fruit and vegetables in their diet is increasingly important, and the competition really focussed the minds of teachers, parents and pupils about eating well - and the role Spanish fresh produce has to play in doing so.”

North Duffield Community Primary receives a cheque for £3,000 to spend on equipment or facilities for the school.

Kingston Primary School in Benfleet, Essex, which was overall winner of the competition in 2007, impressed judges for the second year running to win second place, and a cheque for £1,000. Whittington Church of England Primary Schoolin Shropshire won third and wins a cheque for £500.

Four classes were also chosen as the winning in each year group category and will receive a set of Foods from Spain sports bibs, while runners up school receive sets of Foods from Spain pencils.

All schools that entered the National Primary Schools Competition receive a certificate from the Spanish Ambassador.

All the winning and runners up entries to the National Primary Schools Competition will be available to view shortly at www.foodsfromspain.co.uk
